Wuhan Institute of Virology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, founded in December 1956, is a comprehensive research institution specializing in basic virological research and related technological innovation. In response to the major needs in the field of national life, health and biosafety, the Institute relies on high-level biosafety laboratories to clarify cutting-edge scientific issues related to highly pathogenic viruses, carry out prevention and control technology and product research and development, and systematically improve the emergency response capacity of emerging infectious diseases. Wuhan Institute of virology has established the biosafety research center of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, which was jointly built by the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the National Health Commission and the people's Government of Hubei Province, and was approved and prepared in November 2018.
The scientific research layout includes antiviral research center, molecular virus and pathology research center, analytical Microbiology and nanobiology Research Center, microbial resources and bioinformation research center and emerging infectious diseases research center. It has the first Biosafety (Level 4) laboratory officially put into operation in China, the "national virus resource bank" designated by the Ministry of science and technology and the Ministry of finance, the "national preservation center" microbial germ virus seed preservation center designated by the Health Commission, the national African swine fever regional laboratory, the State Key Laboratory of Virology (jointly built with Wuhan University), the Sino Dutch French joint open laboratory of invertebrate virology Research technology platforms such as the Key Laboratory of highly pathogenic pathogen biology and biosafety, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Hubei Provincial HIV screening laboratory, and Hubei Provincial viral disease engineering technology research center. It has created the only "China virus specimen collection" in China with modern display means, and is the first "demonstration base for national teenagers to enter the scientific world for scientific and technological activities". Virologica Sinica, an English journal sponsored by Wuhan virus Institute, was included in SCI, PubMed and other international authoritative databases, with the latest impact factor of 6.947. At the same time, Wuhan Institute of virology is also the affiliated unit of Hubei Province and the youth working committee of Wuhan society of Microbiology and Chinese society of immunology.
The management system has six functional departments, including the general office, the Party committee office, the personnel department, the scientific research and planning department, the finance department and the graduate department. The support system has Wuhan National biosafety laboratory, public technology service center, network information center, editorial department of Chinese Virology (UK) Journal and other technical support departments.
Wuhan Institute of Virology now has two primary discipline graduate training centers in biology and basic medicine, five secondary discipline graduate training centers in biochemistry and molecular biology, microbiology, immunology, pathogenic biology, biology and medicine, and two post doctoral research mobile stations in biology and basic medicine. There are more than 300 graduate students in school.
